In a notable bust that has made headlines across San Jose, the San Jose Police Department (SJPD) has seized over 1,300 pounds of illegal fireworks and destructive devices in an operation ahead of the Fourth of July celebrations. The haul was recovered from a storage facility on the 200 block of Capitol Expressway, as part of a broader clampdown on the unlawful sale and distribution of fireworks in the city.
The search, which took place last Monday, resulted from undercover operations conducted by SJPD officers who posed as potential buyers to root out sellers of commercial-grade fireworks. These sting operations led them to Javier Martinez, 26, a resident of San Jose, who was later detained in a raid that involved multiple divisions within the police department. In an ever-present reminder of the danger these explosives pose, the SJPD cautions that such illicit activities not only breach the law but also place communities at significant risk.
Details provided by the San Jose Police Department's news release indicate that Martinez was taken into custody around 6 PM and was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on multiple felony charges. The charges include possession, sale, and transportation of destructive devices and illegal fireworks.
