The San Mateo County Superior Court is ringing the alarm on an uptick in scams that prey on locals over jury duty. According to the court, scammers have been posing as court officials or law enforcement and are contacting residents in various ways, including phone, email, text, and even traditional mail.
These scammers, as it turns out, are demanding money or personal info to settle bogus warrants and fines for supposedly skipping out on jury service. While they're busy camouflaging as authority figures, the San Mateo County Superior Court states, "At no time will law enforcement or the Court contact jurors to request payment, threaten arrest, or require that they turn themselves in for missing jury service."
The Court has cautioned San Mateo County residents: Don't engage with these phony demands for cash or data. Whoever gets hit by this jury duty scam should go straight to the local law enforcement and drop a line to Jury Services via [email protected].
