San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus faces significant political and legal strife as she resists removal from office despite misconduct allegations. Last Friday, the San Mateo County civil grand jury issued an Accusation against Sheriff Corpus for alleged willful or corrupt misconduct, as reported by the San Mateo County Government website. This comes months after the Board of Supervisors referred the matter to the civil grand jury in November 2024.
The accusations include one count of conflict of interest and three counts of retaliation, involving hiring and supervision irregularities, and interactions with staff members. Despite these allegations, Corpus has taken legal action against the county. She claims the removal process violates her due process rights, and her lawyer, Thomas Mazzuco, has stated that the sheriff will not resign. "She's not resigning," Mazzuco said, per Hoodline, reinforcing her intention to contest the allegations.
Further complicating the matter, the court has denied Corpus' requests for a temporary restraining order to halt the removal process authorized by Measure A. Measure A, which was passed with an 84% majority vote in March 2025, allows the Board of Supervisors to remove a sheriff with a four-fifths vote under certain conditions. The Board's decision to move forward with the process was unanimous, as per information gathered by the San Mateo County Government website.
