San Mateo Police Department's diligent work led to the arrest of a suspect involved in a string of construction site burglaries.
The investigation kicked off after SMPD received reports of burglaries on the 2100 block of Palm Ave that occurred between May 16-17 and May 20-21. Power tools and equipment worth over $4,000 were stolen. A Community Service Officer, showing commendable persistence, found crucial video evidence on May 27. The footage showed a male jumping the fence of the construction site, later identified as 23-year-old South San Francisco resident Diego Sanchez Palomares.
Staff at a local shelter recognized Sanchez Palomares and confirmed his identity, noting that he returned to the facility with the stolen tools. This led to his arrest by the South San Francisco PD yesterday. After SMPD took over, Sanchez Palomares was interviewed, then booked into San Mateo County Jail, facing second-degree burglary charges.
Emphasizing the significance of security measures, SMPD points out the effectiveness of camera systems in both preventing and solving crimes. "This case highlights how important security camera systems are, whether for your home or for your business," states the San Mateo Police Department. For those considering installation, authorities recommend ensuring coverage of property ingress/egress and street-facing angles. Residents are encouraged to register their systems with SMPD's Real Time Information Center through their website.
