The fate of San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus hangs in the balance as the Board of Supervisors prepares to convene next Tuesday at 8:00 AM for a special meeting to consider her potential removal from office. This meeting will be pivotal in addressing the recommendation from Chief Probation Officer John Keene, which has been kept from the public due to the sheriff’s objections, the San Mateo County government's official news release states.
Earlier, during a pre-removal conference, Sheriff Corpus was presented with the Notice of Intent to Remove, which was based on the findings from a broad investigation that included 524 pages of documentary evidence and 42 witness interviews. Allegations pointed to potential violations of law linked to the sheriff's duties, neglect of duties, and obstruction of an investigation into her conduct, all of which could support her removal if substantiated.
Simultaneously, the Mercury News reported that if the board upholds Keene's recommendation to adopt the Notice of Intent and proceed with the removal, Sheriff Corpus retains the right to appeal, therefore, mandating a formal removal hearing before a neutral hearing officer, this process would further culminate in another board recommendation requiring the same four-fifths majority to confirm her removal.
The backdrop of this administrative turmoil stems from allegations that emerged from a 400-page report last year chronicling accusations of corruption, workplace misconduct, and inappropriate relations with her former chief of staff, attacks that Sheriff Corpus has consistently denied but the accusation of an inappropriate relationship with her former chief of staff Victor Aenlle among other items, yet, has refused to step down; a 400-page report released by the county the previous year has catalyzed the strive, per details from the Mercury News.
