During a routine traffic stop late Saturday night, Santa Rosa Police Department's Special Enforcement Team (SET) officers discovered more than they bargained for—an unregistered handgun—after pulling over an Oakland resident on a sleepy city street corner. The stop was made at the intersection of Bennett Valley Road and E Street, where SET, a squad formed in response to the uptick in gun violence and illegal weapon possession in Santa Rosa, conducts regularly scheduled patrols.
Upon inspection, officers were met with the strong scent of recently smoked marijuana emanating from within the vehicle, leading to the driver's admission of having a blunt alongside loose cannabis inside; however, what unfolded next was an unexpected find—officers searching the car uncovered a loaded, hidden Smith & Wesson model 469 9mm handgun, according to the SRPD news release.
Felipe Garcia-Palma, the 20-year-old driver and owner of the vehicle, found himself under arrest and consequently booked at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility. Garcia-Palma is currently facing felony charges for possession of a concealed firearm in a vehicle (PC 25400(A)(1)) and possession of an unregistered firearm (PC 25850(c)(6)), the SRPD confirmed.
The arrest shines a spotlight on the persistent issue of gun control and public safety, a concern that SRPD has been dedicatedly combating through units like the Special Enforcement Team; the department has iterated its commitment "to making the City of Santa Rosa a safe place to live, work, and play," as the loaded gun in this case starkly underscores the day-to-day risks law enforcement and residents face.
