Authorities in Santa Rosa are conducting a homicide investigation after two deceased individuals were discovered at an Atlanta Court apartment complex yesterday. The Santa Rosa Police Department (SRPD) responded to a call reporting a potential domestic violence case at a residence within the 1500 block of Atlanta Court. The police were called around 2:40 PM, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department, spurred by concerns relayed over the phone by someone who wasn't present at the location.

Upon arrival, SRPD officers could not contact any individuals inside the apartment quickly. During their investigation, they were informed by neighboring residents of what sounded like several gunshots just before the law enforcement's arrival. In the interests of public safety, and given the potential threat of an armed individual present, the police evacuated residents from three nearby apartments in the complex.

Efforts to reach occupants of the concerned apartment by the SRPD Hostage Negotiations Team did not bear fruit, prompting the intervention of the SRPD's Special Weapons and Tactics team (SWAT). With a SWAT medic from the Santa Rosa Fire Department (SRFD), further communication attempts were made but remained unsuccessful. It was around 4:30 PM when SWAT team members entered and found two bodies, both of whom had been fatally shot, in a back bedroom of the apartment.

Further investigations into the case have been handed over to the SRPD Violent Crimes Investigations Team (VCI), assisted by SRPD Field Evidence Technicians, who arrived to process the scene. The deceased were identified preliminarily as a 24-year-old female and a 24-year-old male, recently moved to Santa Rosa from Southern California. Their identities are withheld pending official identification by the Coroner and notification of next of kin. A search warrant served at the apartment led to the recovery of four firearms, suspected to be owned by the male decedent. The preliminary findings suggest that the woman suffered multiple gunshot wounds from an assault rifle, and the male sustained at least one gunshot wound from the same weapon.

The relationship between the deceased and the exact sequence of events that led to their deaths is still under examination. However, detectives believe that the deadly incident was isolated within the apartment, posing no continued threat to the community. More information is due to be released as the investigation progresses. This case marks the city's eighth homicide since the beginning of the year.
