In a routine traffic stop on Wednesday, the Santa Rosa Police Department's Special Enforcement Team made a substantial recovery. According to the SRPD News Release, officers stopped a vehicle around 6:05 PM in the 400 block of Lincoln Street. The encounter resulted in the detention of Joel Karikari, a 20-year-old Santa Rosa resident, along with a passenger, after Karikari attempted to flee.

During the stop, an officer noted the presence of a .556 caliber rifle cartridge inside the vehicle, prompting a search that uncovered a cache of weapons and illegal substances. Among the findings were a stolen AR-15 M&P rifle and another unregistered rifle, which was, along with a loaded magazine, concealed in a baking tray located in the rear passenger compartment of the vehicle. An array of narcotics, including Xanax, methamphetamine, and suspected counterfeit Adderall pills, were also seized.

Karikari now faces multiple felony charges, including illegal possession of a semi-automatic firearm and narcotics. The police indicate that Karikari was booked at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility on charges that range from possession of an assault weapon to transportation of a controlled substance with the intent to sell. This arrest aligns with the dedicated efforts of the SRPD's Special Enforcement Team, which was formed to tackle the increasing gun violence and rampant illegal firearm possession in Santa Rosa.
