Scottsdale's municipal bastion is bracing for a security shake-up come this July. In an effort to bolster the safety of its employees, patrons, and the broader public, Scottsdale City Hall is rolling out a suite of security upgrades that are due to kick off on July 7. Stepping through its doors will soon involve walk-through metal detection scanners akin to those you'd see at airports, as well as bag checks to ensure prohibited items don't make their way inside. To ensure things go over smoothly, security officers will be on hand to guide visitors through the new process.
According to a recent announcement from the City of Scottsdale, they have looked to the One Civic Center for inspiration, whose security measures have been dubbed effective. Now, vis-a-vis City Hall, signage will direct visitors to proper entry and exit points for security screenings, and those tasked with ensuring the security will see an increase in their ranks. In the wake of an environment where public spaces need to be safeguarded against potential threats, these measures are seen as a step in the right direction.
For those who carry arms legally, Scottsdale City Hall has made accommodations. Adhering to the restrictions of A.R.S. § 13-3102 A, weapons won't be permitted inside the building, but a secure lockbox facility at the entrance will allow individuals to stow their legal weapons before going through the security screenings. This nod to Second Amendment rights while maintaining a safe space walks a fine line in respecting personal freedoms and public safety.
Timing is everything, and the city has picked the summer schedule to bring these security changes online — a strategic move because of the typically lower visitor volume and meeting activity. It allows for a sort of grace period, ensuring visitors and employees alike can get used to the new security theatre without the pressure of long lines or large crowds. Nestled at 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd., Scottsdale City Hall wants to remind its visitors of the impending changes and encourages engagement with the Scottsdale Police Department for details or concerns.
