As the sun rose over the Gateway Trailhead in Scottsdale, a gathering of nearly 50 individuals from across the nation paid tribute to the late Hannah Moody on the morning of what would have been her 32nd birthday. According to a 12News report, friends, family, and even strangers who were touched by the community impact of the avid hiker, convened for an honorary hike at the site where Moody lost her life earlier in the month.
In a poignant blend of celebration and mourning, attendees embarked on a walk along the trails Moody once trekked. Megan Pasquel, a close friend, shared with 12News, "People flew in from all over," exemplifying the widespread effect of Moody's tragic passing. Jessica Giannina, Hannah's roommate, spoke to the residual sense of her absence in everyday life: "It's like moments like that is when the, you know, waves of emotion come about," as noted by FOX 10 Phoenix.
While the Scottsdale Police have indicated no signs of foul play or trauma, the official cause of death remains pending from the medical examiner. Moody's last Instagram video showed her well-prepared for a hike with five gallons of water, yet her body was found 600 yards off trail from the parking lot. With temperatures soaring near 100 degrees Fahrenheit that day, Moody's supporters suspect heat exhaustion played a role in the hiker's demise.
Pasquel, expecting a child, reflected on the special bond she shared with Moody, recounting a meaningful hike from the day before discovering her pregnancy. "She took me on this 9-mile hike on Thanksgiving, and was killing it… I mean, she was such an avid hiker and did amazing out there," Pasquel disclosed to 12News. She finds consolation in believing Moody will be a guardian angel for her soon-to-be-born son.
The community's show of love and the commemorative hike underscore Moody's vibrant presence and the touching connections she cultivated during her life. As Giannina says, "Hannah was amazing.. and it was a great reminder that every person you meet, whether it's a stranger or someone you have known for a while, everyone's life matters, and it's important how precious life is," as mentioned by FOX 10 Phoenix.
