In the stride against rising antisemitism, Senator Gallego of Arizona has shown substantial support for legislation aimed at stifling the spread of hate while also reinforcing the importance of Holocaust education in schools. As incidents targeting Jewish communities surge, these legislative efforts come as a critical move to address and prevent further violence, as reported by the Arizona Senator's Office.
With a marked increase in violent attacks against Jewish individuals and institutions, such as the horrific Boulder supermarket shooting and the arson at Governor Josh Shapiro’s residence, Gallego's stance is clear. "Right now, Jewish communities across the country are facing real threats. Antisemitic incidents in the U.S. have skyrocketed in recent years, and they’re becoming deadlier. That’s why I’m supporting this legislation to condemn this violence and make it clear that antisemitism has no place in Arizona, in our country, or anywhere in the world," he announced in a heartfelt, yet grave statement, according to the Arizona Senator's Office website.
One of the central pieces of legislation Gallego backs is The Holocaust Education and Antisemitism Lessons (HEAL) Act. This act mandates the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to undertake a comprehensive study on how the Holocaust is taught, which could spearhead advancements in Holocaust education protocols for educators nationwide, as per the Arizona Senator's Office.
Senator Gallego, a long-time supporter of Jewish communities, backed a bipartisan resolution strongly condemning the recent rise in violence against Jewish people. The resolution openly addresses serious attacks, including the killing of Israeli Embassy staff. Gallego believes antisemitism goes against the values of both Arizona and the country, and that it must be removed from public life and conversation, according to the Arizona Senator's Office.
Gallego has also supported the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which tells the Department of Education to use a clear definition of antisemitism when looking into discrimination on college campuses. He’s also worked to get funding for a program that helps protect Jewish nonprofits, like synagogues, from terror threats. Together, these efforts show his ongoing commitment to keeping Jewish communities safe, as reported by the Arizona Senator's Office.
