San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus has made a decisive move by naming Sergio Enriquez as the new Assistant Sheriff for Operations, a role set to take effect next Sunday. In a recent press release, Sheriff Corpus lauded Enriquez's three-decade tenure in law enforcement as a testament to his dedication and leadership abilities. Enriquez will oversee the Operations Division, a sprawling office segment encompassing investigations, patrol, professional standards, and transit bureaus.
Enriquez's appointment is a notable one. He inherits a significant mantle with the responsibility for guiding key sectors of the county's law enforcement strategies, his predecessor having laid a foundation that meshes robust policing with heightened sensitivities to community needs. Enriquez is no stranger to the law enforcement circuit, having begun his career in 1991 with the Inglewood Police Department and notably retiring as Assistant Chief of Police from the Santa Ana Police Department in 2024. According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office announcement, his accomplishments include spearheading the first De-Escalation Training Center in Orange County and launching a Body Worn Camera Program that became a regional model.
The newly minted Assistant Sheriff also has an academic footprint, holding a master's degree in psychology with an emphasis on First Responder Trauma from Pepperdine University, and fulfilling roles as an adjunct professor and a lead instructor within criminal justice education. Enriquez's breadth of experience extends beyond domestic police work, as he spent five years enhancing international relations between Santa Ana and the Mexican Consulate, an assignment that fortified his diplomatic prowess and cultural acumen.
