Brace yourselves, foodies and pitmasters – the sizzle of the National Capital Barbecue Battle is set to take over the streets of our nation's capital, promising a weekend stuffed with the aroma of smoked meats and tangy sauces. According to an advisory from the Metropolitan Police Department, the event is slated from June 20, to June 23. D.C. will play host to grill aficionados from across the country, converging to showcase their culinary prowess.
For those planning to navigate the downtown area, it's important to note road closures and parking restrictions. Starting 6:30 p.m. on June 20, through to 2:00 a.m. on June 23, streets will become pedestrian zones to accommodate the event. Set to close are stretches of 3rd Street, Maryland Avenue, and other key arteries in the heart of the city. Furthermore, motorists should be prepared for "Emergency No Parking" notices lining the affected districts, as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Street closures are extensive, transforming the grid into a festive ground -- 3rd Street from Constitution Avenue, NW to Independence Avenue, SW; Maryland Avenue from 3rd to Independence Avenue, SW; and multiple other blocks, including portions of 4th, 6th, Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues, are in the no-go zone for vehicles, as noted by the Metropolitan Police Department.
The Barbecue Battle, known for its blend of competitive cooking and street festival fun, also throws a wrench into regular traffic patterns, hence city officials urge the use of public transportation. For visitors and residents alike, planning routes in advance is advised to avoid the crunch of detours, and delays, as per the Metropolitan Police Department.
