A grim scene unfolded in Largo, Florida, when deputies responded to a welfare check and discovered two individuals deceased from gunshot wounds. The victims, identified as Elizabeth Lee Kirchner, 53, and Steven Eric Kirchner, 64, were found in their home at 29 Saunders Avenue by Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies on Friday, after concerns were raised about an employee's unexplained absence from work. The case rapidly progressed from a welfare check to a double homicide investigation, enveloping multiple states and law enforcement agencies, WFLA reports.
The couple's adult son, 37-year-old Nicholas Steven Kirchner, quickly emerged as the principal suspect after leaving the scene before authorities arrived. In a separate incident in South Carolina, he menacingly stated, “I’ve already killed two people — I’ll kill some more,” an incident that caught the attention of local detectives and ultimately led to his arrest in Taliaferro County, Georgia, according to the Bellingham Herald. Neighbors in the usually quiet neighborhood expressed their disbelief and sorrow over the tragic events, with one resident, Tracy Dinehart noting, "It’s incredible to think you are just two doors down from something like this; it’s a quiet place."
The suspect, after his arrest, reportedly confessed multiple times to the killings and referred to his actions as a "righteous kill." Nicholas Kirchner is now facing two counts of first-degree murder, with details of his motivations and the circumstances leading to the tragic incident still under investigation. Officials have not disclosed further information about the case or the nature of the incident involving Kirchner in South Carolina, FOX 13 News reports.
The case has cast a somber shadow over the Largo community, which is situated approximately 25 miles west of downtown Tampa. The investigation remains ongoing, as authorities piece together the circumstances that led up to the double homicide, and as Nicholas Kirchner now awaits legal proceedings in the McDuffie County Jail, Georgia.
