South Fulton has inaugurated a new $4.4 million roundabout at the intersection of Butner and Union Roads, a move aimed at bolstering safety and reducing traffic fatalities in an area with a history of dangerous crashes. Officials, including City Councilmember Carmalitha Gumbs, who has been a vocal advocate for the project, celebrated the completion on Wednesday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The improvement project, which was funded by the city and county through a special local option sales tax for transportation (TSPLOST), includes not just the roundabout but also upgrades to pedestrian pathways, gutters, and drainage systems, as WSBTV detailed. Officials express optimism that these changes will significantly mitigate the risks at what has been one of the city's most perilous intersections, one that has witnessed numerous collisions and lamentable fatalities over the years.
Highlighting the critical nature of the roundabout, Councilmember Helen Willis, acknowledging the grim realities of the locale stated, "It’s real. We’ve had several fatalities there, even a fatality during the construction proves, so this roundabout is essential to improving the safety and the quality of life for the residents in the City of South Fulton," as FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Gumbs added a personal note to the issue, disclosing "I live close to the area. I hear the crashes that have taken place, and we do a lot to try and keep our residents safe," further emphasizing the roundabout's importance in the city's journey toward safeguarding its citizens.
