A wind-driven blaze wreaked havoc on two homes in South San Francisco last Friday, with flames quickly spreading due to gusty conditions. The South San Francisco Fire Department swooped in at 12:19 PM upon reports of a fully involved structure fire at 50 Greenwood Drive, as confirmed by The City of South San Francisco.
Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters encountered a working fire engulfing the garage and first floor of one home and aggressively attacking the next-door neighbor's house exterior and front porch. Responders fought to keep the blaze under control, quickly safeguarding one structure, reducing potential ruin to its front entrance and facade. However, the other home suffered wrathful damages significant enough to render it uninhabitable.
The fire department teams labored intensely against the wind's enhancement of the fire, a battle anticipated to span the day due to the risk of re-ignition. Ensuring the residents' safety, the crews coordinated with the American Red Cross, arranging temporary housing for the affected homeowners.
The severity of the incident prompted the call for a second alarm, rallying mutual aid from fire departments across North County, San Bruno, Colma, and Central County. Their joint effort exemplified collaboration amidst crisis, with no reported injuries to firefighters or the public.
