In a string of law enforcement responses that culminated in a significant seizure of firearms and ammunition, Springfield's ShotSpotter system proved pivotal on the evening of June 27. According to the Springfield Police Department, officers initially were drawn to the 0-100 block of Summit Street after the technology detected gunfire. Discovering evidence of a shooting, they shortly maneuvered to address another alert on the 2300 block of Main Street, where they found further proof of gunfire.
Springfield's real-time surveillance capability, through R-TAC, enabled the swift identification of a suspect vehicle connected to Andy Perez-Coiscou. Arriving at his Woodrow Street residence, officers intended to engage Perez-Coiscou. Within minutes, as reported by officers, the suspect was under arrest. Detectives of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) secured a search warrant following the arrest. Later that night, they entered Perez-Coiscou's home under the mandate of the warrant and discovered a rifle accompanied by a variety of high-capacity magazines, including a prodigious 100-round drum.
The litany of charges against 23-year-old Perez-Coiscou includes the possession of a large-capacity firearm and numerous accounts of possessing high-capacity feeding devices, among other firearm-related violations. He faces an array of other charges tied to driving and drug offenses, indicating a disregard for multiple facets of the law.
