In the aftermath of the May 16 tornado that ripped through St. Louis, city services are scrambling to manage the increased strain on waste management systems. In a break from the norm, the City of St. Louis Refuse Division has received a pass to put trash, recyclables, and yard waste all in one container, so to speak. According to the City of St. Louis' website, this temporary exemption granted by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is all about practicality in the face of adversity.
It's a bit of a wrench in the gears of those residents who painstakingly separate their waste in an effort to be eco-friendly, but city officials assure this is a temporary measure. "Recycling drop off centers, for residential use only, will continue to collect and process recyclables, and residents may bring them to these locations," as noted on the City of St. Louis website. This exemption is slated to hold until June 30, giving the city some breathing room to get its services back on track.
