In a recent gathering, the Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) of St. Paul addressed a slew of property variance requests with decisions that ranged from full approvals to unanimous denials. Minutes from the public hearing held earlier show clear outcomes for every item entertained on the agenda, underscoring the city's ongoing efforts to balance development needs with zoning regulations, as per the City of St. Paul Board of Zoning Appeals.
Among the approved items was a major variance for Lobsang Yeshi to convert a single-family home at 315 Morton Street West into a religious institution. The board unanimously supported the plan despite the building’s failure to meet the nine-foot side yard setback, according to the City of St. Paul Board of Zoning Appeals. Independent School District 625 also received approval to reconstruct a loading area at Maxfield Elementary, even though it did not meet required landscaping and screening standards.
The meeting also saw an unequivocal stance on proposals by Stronger Sober House, which sought to establish two supportive housing facilities within close proximity to existing ones. Citing zoning code requirements on minimum distance, both applications—one for a facility at 519 Farrington Street and another at 269 Harrison Avenue—were denied as they did not meet the prescribed 1,320-foot buffer from similar existing facilities. Despite facing a detailed agenda that day, the BZA advanced swiftly to warrant no "Old Business" to linger and was able to adjourn with all new business concluded.
