Michael Tremayne Smith, a 40-year-old from Sugarland, Texas, has been handed a 120-month federal prison sentence for crimes relating to narcotics trafficking and burglary. Smith's legal woes culminated from his involvement in the burglary of Drugco Discount Pharmacy in Littleton, North Carolina, and subsequent offences tied to the possession and intention to distribute oxycodone.
After pleading guilty on March 11, Smith's sentence is a result of the January 2022 burglary where security cameras recorded two individuals — later identified as Smith and his accomplice — making their way through the drive-thru window to illegally acquire prescription medication. Law enforcement agents were able swiftly to connect the dots when a Franklin County Sheriff’s deputy stopped Smith's vehicle on I-85 and found a stockpile of unopened and opened oxycodone pill bottles, as well as promethazine, which happened to directly match the drugs stolen from the Drugco Discount Pharmacy.
In a statement obtained by U.S. Attorney's Office, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, Daniel P. Bubar announced the sentencing following deliberations by United States District Judge James C. Dever III. Smith's passenger and co-defendant, LaCarlton Lee Johnson, Jr., also faced legal action, pleading guilty and receiving an 87-month imprisonment term.
The downplaying of Michael Tremayne Smith's criminal saga comes with the due diligence of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer C. Nucci prosecuted the case, ensuring that the perpetrators were held accountable for the disruption they caused to the Littleton community's peace and security by their actions which have now been brought to a close in the judiciary's eyes.
