A routine welfare check in Kentwood led to a brief but dramatic police chase on Tuesday afternoon, after a woman suspected of falling asleep at the wheel fled from law enforcement and ended up crashing into multiple police cruisers. According to WZZM13, the incident initiated around 1:30 p.m. when the Kentwood Police Department (KPD) responded to a call about someone who seemed to be asleep in a car near 28th Street.

The situation escalated when officers, having located the sleeping woman, tried to engage her, prompting her to speed away. A brief pursuit ensued, culminating in the woman's vehicle striking several police cars at the intersection of 44th Street and Kalamazoo Avenue. She was subsequently taken to a local hospital and is now being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility, WOODTV reported.

Officials have stated that no officers were harmed during the incident, while other drivers involved were checked for minor injuries at the scene. The woman, whose identity has not been released, faces charges that include fleeing and eluding, resisting police, and causing damage to police vehicles. Additionally, the Kentwood Police Department is investigating whether she had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the chase, WWMT noted.

While the KPD has not disclosed detailed information about the suspect's condition or the legal proceedings to follow, they are calling on anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Anonymous tips can, also be submitted through the Silent Observer program.
