In a sweeping move by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and its federal law enforcement partners, nearly 1,500 individuals have been apprehended across Massachusetts in a monthlong operation dubbed "Operation Patriot." ICE Boston, alongside agencies like the FBI, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the U.S. Coast Guard, conducted arrests throughout May targeting illegal aliens involved in organized crime, gangs, and severe criminal behavior.

"The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is a safer place today thanks to the hard work and determination of the men and women of ICE and our federal partners," told ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston acting Field Office Director Patricia H. Hyde in a statement obtained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news releases. They cited the arrest of individuals with significant criminal histories, including "murderers, rapists, drug traffickers, child sex predators and members of violent transnational criminal gangs."

According to the details released, more than half the 1,461 arrested had significant criminal convictions or charges, with 790 of the alien offenders charged with or convicted of crimes in the United States or abroad. Homeland Security Investigations New England Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol shared with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news releases the importance of the operation, emphasizing the goal of community safety by arresting those who have "flouted the laws of our nation when they chose to remain here without legal status."

ICE's coordinated efforts with multiple agencies such as the ATF, the DEA, and the Diplomatic Security Service target criminal alien offenders and transnational organizations like MS-13 and 18th Street gangs, which are known to operate in and around Boston. FBI Boston acting Special Agent in Charge Kimberly Milka described the operation as massive and aimed at "habitual lawbreakers" who posed threats to the safety and well-being of the region, as detailed in the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news releases.

The significant arrests spanned a wide array of criminal activities. Among those detained included a 55-year-old Salvadoran national with an Interpol Red Notice for serious charges in El Salvador; a 32-year-old Guatemalan registered sex offender facing multiple assault charges; and a 45-year-old Guatemalan national convicted of murder in Boston. All individuals will remain in ICE custody pending their removal proceedings or deportation from the United States.

The operation also saw arrests made in locations where local jurisdictions had previously refused to honor immigration detainer requests, leading to at-large arrests within Massachusetts communities. In some instances, ICE employed expanded enforcement tactics, including simultaneous operations on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, reported U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement news releases.

Residents are encouraged to report crimes and suspicious activities by contacting ICE at 866-DHS-2-ICE (866-347-2423) or by completing the online tip form. The consolidated effort by federal agencies underscores a continued commitment to enforce immigration laws and enhance public safety.
