The Tennessee Volunteers baseball team is bolstering its lineup with the addition of Bowling Green transfer DJ Newman, a former Freshman All-American who shone as a two-way player, batting .419 before an injury curtailed his junior season, as WVLT reported. Newman, whose career .388 batting average comes with an impressive 3.60 ERA in 27 appearances over three seasons, joins his BGSU teammate Garrett Wright among Tennessee's recent acquisitions from the transfer portal.
Notably, Newman's commitment follows another significant get for the Vols, Henry Ford's leap from the Cavaliers, where he recorded key stats including a .348 batting average and 28 home runs over two seasons according to an article from Vols Wire; Ford's versatility between right field and first base giving the team added flexibility and offensive prowess this dynamic duo chronicling their potential impact in the forthcoming collegiate baseball endeavors.
Newman announced his decision in an Instagram post stating, "I want to thank my teammates and coaches for a great three years at BGSU," and going on to say, "But now it's time for the next chapter, let's get to work, GBO," revealing a mix of gratitude and eagerness to start with the Vols, as noted by 247Sports.
The Archbold, Ohio, native standing as Bowling Green's sole two-way player in his freshman year Newman made commendable strides including leading the team in batting average (.383) and on-base percentage (.481) along with securing a 15-game hitting streak in his sophomore year significant figures that Tennessee hopes to further in their quest for a standout season.
