In a recent development following the devastating May tornado, Malachi Chaney, son of actor Tray Chaney, has been transferred to a rehabilitation facility. Tray Chaney, known for his role in "The Wire," shared on social media that his son is on the road to recovery after the traumatic event that ravaged their Henry County home. FOX 5 Atlanta reports that Malachi, after a 12-day hospital stay, is now awake and preparing to leave the hospital, amid support including a haircut request to his barber.
Malachi's journey through the health care system began with a critical admission to Grady Memorial Hospital, where, he faced life-threatening conditions including facial fractures and broken ribs, as per the family's statements. The tornado hit unexpectedly around 3 p.m. on May 29, catapulting the 19-year-old nearly 300 feet from his home, a fact that Tray Chaney recounted to FOX 5 Atlanta. The aftermath saw Malachi spending vital recovery time in ICU before being moved to a regular room, his father posted updates on social media, sharing Malachi's resilience and humor despite the ordeal.
Looking ahead, Malachi is set to commence treatment at Atlanta's Shepherd Rehabilitation Center, focusing on healing from his brain injury. In a statement obtained by 11Alive, his father expressed optimism about his son's recovery: "Malachi is functioning, he’s laughing, feeding himself, he still needs a little assistance on walking and just getting back to normalcy."
The rehabilitation center is also accommodating the family's need to be close, ensuring an extra bed in Malachi's room for either of his parents. His father added, Tray Chaney had the heart-to-heart about the tornado with Malachi, once his condition had improved, sharing their survival story. In a touching conversation, recounted by Tray Chaney to 11Alive, the actor affirmed their resilience likening them to real life superheroes for facing, and surviving a tornado.
In the midst of recovery, the community has rallied in support of Malachi's journey back to health and normalcy. A GoFundMe campaign created to aid in medical expenses and rebuilding the Chaney's home has already amassed over $100,000, with a goal set at $120,000. Despite the trauma and ongoing challenges, these efforts underscore a narrative of community solidarity and the strength of human spirits in adversity.
