Chaos erupted outside a North Hollywood Metro station on Saturday, resulting in three people being rushed to the hospital following an altercation involving a stabbing and a shooting at the busy transit hub. According to KTLA, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to the incident at the intersection of Lankershim and Chandler Boulevards at around 6:18 p.m., where two victims were found stabbed, and the suspect was shot during an exchange of gunfire.
The confrontation and subsequent injuries led to a swift law enforcement response, and as Jeff Finn, a resident, told KTLA, "I’ve seen a lot of things happen here, but this may be the worst one so far," indicating the severity and shock of the violent exchange in what is typically a crowded area for commuters, the situation deteriorating rapidly as onlookers gathered and police worked to control the situation. NBC Los Angeles confirms that a suspect is in custody, although the conditions of the victims remained unclear at the time.
Further details revealed by CBS News Los Angeles clarified that two Metro security guards were among those injured during what was described as an "unprovoked attack" by the suspect. The confrontation led to one of the guards discharging a firearm in self-defense, hitting the individual who initiated the attack. "During the confrontation, one of the guards discharged a firearm in self-defense, striking the assailant who initiated the attack," a Metro spokesperson stated, underscoring the tense scenario that unfolded.
The conditions of the two Metro security guards and the suspect, who is also hospitalized, were not immediately known. However, the transport authority expressed its concern and support for all involved. "Metro extends its wishes for a speedy recovery to both guards and thanks the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments for their quick response and assistance," they conveyed in a statement. In the wake of the violence, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to assist in the ongoing investigation, providing the LAPD tip line 1-877-LAPD-24-7 as a point of contact for potential witnesses or those with relevant information that could shed more light on the events leading up to, and during the North Hollywood station disturbance.
