As residents of Honolulu brace for changing weather, the National Weather Service has released its latest forecast. According to the National Weather Service, moderate east-southeast winds are expected to prevail through today, with a shift and increase in strength by the weekend. The weather pattern, influenced by a trough to the west and a ridge to the northeast, will direct the trade winds to bring clouds and showers primarily to windward and mauka areas.
Trade winds will bring some clouds and light showers to windward and mountain areas, especially later in the week. On the western slopes, a mix of sea breezes may lead to a few extra clouds. Overall, showers will stay light due to stable conditions above. By mid-week, the weather system causing the current pattern will weaken, and high pressure to the north will strengthen the trade winds heading into the weekend, as reported by the National Weather Service.
The aviation outlook, as detailed by the National Weather Service, calls for light to moderate trade winds across the island chain today, alongside the potential development of a hybrid sea breeze pattern that could lead to increased cloud cover and showers over and adjacent to terrain. There's an ongoing AIRMET Sierra advising of mountain obscuration for all windward locales of the islands, but conditions are expected to improve later in the morning.
A strong high-pressure system northeast of Hawaii is keeping moderate to strong trade winds over the ocean. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect until early Wednesday for areas like Maalaea Bay, the Pailolo and Alenuihaha Channels, and waters off the leeward and southeast sides of the Big Island. This advisory might be extended as winds are expected to get stronger, as per the National Weather Service.
