The auroras, those mesmerizing ribbons of color usually relegated to polar skies, may make a rare appearance in not just the perennially chilly realms of Alaska, but also in the much more southerly Tri-State region. According to a report by FOX19, the Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for today and tomorrow, with the potential for the Northern Lights to illuminate the skies across the northern half of the United States, provided the weather cooperates.
This potential viewing opportunity is the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) that burst from the sun on May 30. The strength at which this storm of solar materials hits Earth will dictate the intensity of the geomagnetic tumult and how far south the auroras might be observed. While a G4 storm watch is indeed a rare event, it's suggested that conditions are primed for an impressive showing, giving the Tri-State area a shot at witnessing this celestial spectacle from backyards, free from the obscuring glow of city lights.
Adding to the anticipation, Local 12 is forecasting storm commencement between midday Sunday and Sunday evening, with the CME anticipated to make its presence known between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT. We are told to turn our gazes skyward optimally from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. and again for early risers from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. A second chance for auroral delight is hinted at for tomorrow night, hinging on the storm's persistence.
Yet, the auroral display's reach might extend even beyond the Tri-State and Alaska. Space.com reports that a total of 20 U.S. states could be poised under the Northern Lights' swathe, thanks to a brush with a high-speed solar wind pressing upon our planet's magnetic sheath. Not only high-latitude states like Michigan and Maine, but potentially even more southerly states might find themselves beneath the aurora's enchanting glow, should G3 or G4 storm levels be reached.
As the event draws near, space weather forecasters predict a Kp index peak at 4.67 over the weekend, indicating a strong possibility for an extraordinary sky show. Aurora chasers are already encouraged to prepare their cameras for the night's potential marvels, and everyone is advised to stay updated with the latest developments through forecasters' aurora forecast live blogs.
