Two individuals lost their lives in a shooting incident on the Las Vegas Strip, following a dispute that began on social media and culminated in a livestreamed confrontation near the Bellagio fountains. The suspect, 41-year-old Manuel Ruiz, later turned himself in at a Henderson police station and is likely to face charges of open murder with a deadly weapon, as reported by Las Vegas Review-Journal. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Undersheriff Andrew Walsh explained that the conflict between Ruiz and one of the victims had been ongoing across various social media platforms, an aspect also emphasized by News 3.
The shooting unfolded late Sunday evening as Metro officers heard gunshots and discovered two victims with gunshot wounds, who were later declared deceased at the scene, both articles revealed additional information regarding the background of the online feud however only Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Marc Sanson, a fellow YouTuber who knew the victims and the suspect, saying, "What happened last night was a terrible act of hate, and we are heartbroken for the children and families on both sides, as well as the sorrow of losing our close friends." Investigators are of the belief that the altercation was not random, the suspect and the victims had prior exchanges on social media that may have contributed to the fatal incident.
The shooting, which caused a temporary shutdown of a segment of the Las Vegas Boulevard, appeared to stem from a series of provocative posts between two social media personalities known as 'Sin City Manny' and 'Finny Da Legend,' with the altercation and subsequent shooting incident reportedly being captured on a live video stream. MGM Resorts International, the Bellagio property owner, had not provided an immediate response at the time, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The aftermath saw responses from the Las Vegas community and those who are familiar with the culture of social media content creation, particularly among YouTube personalities, who have expressed shock and dismay over the fatal outcomes of what began as an online spat; both outlets revealed the dynamics of the incident, with the known figures in the online community, such as YouTuber 'TheOtherMeLV' and commentator Todd Witteles expressing their perspectives on the escalation that took place, his wife, whom Sanson referred to as “Bubbly,” had become friends he would interact with mostly online but had met in person on a few occasions Sanson said he had known Ruiz too but had grown distant from him after he began talking more with Finny, as reported by Las Vegas Review-Journal.
As the area returned to its routine after the crime scene was cleared, local residents and visitors shared their sentiments about the safety of the city, with TikTok user Thelma Louise asserting, "Vegas has the label 'Sin City,' and we all know, 'what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," a statement obtained by Las Vegas Review-Journal.
