Valley Metro is stepping up its game starting Saturday,  as it rolls out more frequent trips on its light rail and streetcar services. In a move to boost convenience and reduce wait times, the transportation agency is introducing more regularity to commuters' schedules with light rail trains arriving every 12 minutes until 7 p.m., and streetcar service in Tempe increasing its frequency to every 15 minutes until evening.

These changes coincide with Valley Metro's two-line light rail system debut, which represents a major leap in connecting the sprawling metropolis. According to a news release on Phoenix's official website, weekday riders can expect reduced wait times and smoother transfers between the redesigned A and B lines.

The latest service increases are part of the broader Transportation 2050 (T2050) plan, which was set in motion by Phoenix voters back in August 2015. T2050 is a 35-year initiative aimed at transforming local transit with upgrades that include more frequent bus service, new light rail connections, and significant street improvements. A 7/10ths of a cent city sales tax, introduced on January 1, 2016, is the primary funding mechanism for the plan.

Over its lifespan, T2050 is estimated to generate roughly $16.7 billion. Alongside additional federal and county funds, passenger fares, and other sources, these monies are earmarked to cover more than half the plan's total costs, as detailed by the Phoenix Public Transit announcement. Valley Metro serves as a vital link in Maricopa County, offering not only light rail and bus services but also paratransit and alternative transportation programs such as commuter vanpools and telework assistance.

Ensuring the future of public transit, voters came through once more last year with the passage of Prop. 479, following up on a similar, successful initiative with Prop. 400. These propositions secure ongoing regional funding support for transit, underlying the community's commitment to accessible and eco-friendly transportation options.
