An unexpected event disrupted the southwest Atlanta neighborhood when a car slammed into a local residence yesterday morning. The home, situated on the 2600 block of Lisa Drive SW, sustained significant damage when the vehicle, reportedly moving at high speed, veered off the road. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the car struck another parked vehicle before colliding with the home's carport. Emergency crews were faced with the challenge of extracting the car without causing further structural damage.
The driver of the vehicle was subsequently transported to the hospital, though their injuries are not believed to be critical. No one was inside an home at the time of the accident, possibly averting a larger tragedy. "My friend gave me a call about 5:45 and I just jumped right up because that's usually the time I get up and go to work. I was getting dressed, I had to call in and take care of stuff," homeowner Valdis Brown recounted in an interview obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The residence has historical significance to the community as it belonged to the late Helen Brown Harding, a figure known for her culinary contributions to Atlanta through her restaurant, Bankhead Seafood. Her vehicle was parked on the premises when the accident occurred. "The Escalade is my mom’s. This other car is the vehicle that came down at a crazy rate of speed, with no brakes I guess, and just plowed into it and knocked it clean right through the whole house," Brown detailed in a statement to Atlanta News First.
Tow truck operators faced a peculiar task as one of the vehicles ended up partially lodged inside the home. At one stage, the car dangled out of the back of the house while workers strived to secure its removal. Brown shared with Atlanta News First, that they eventually had to pull one vehicle through the back of the house to extricate it. The identity of the driver and the causes leading up to the crash remain under investigation, with no immediate information on potential charges.
