Times are shifting in Wake County and so is the mode of paying property taxes. Starting July 1, Apex, Holly Springs, Knightdale, and Rolesville will bid farewell to accepting in-person property tax payments, a move that nods to the digital age we're all a part of. According to Wake County's recent announcement, residents in these towns will need to embrace alternative payment methods including the convenience of online transactions, the post, or visiting other designated in-person sites within the county.
Surveying the terrain of taxpayer preference, Wake County Tax Administrator Marcus Kinrade explained, "With a growing number of people using online and digital options, it makes sense to realign our payment options accordingly." It's a trend that can't be ignored. In-person payments within these towns have dwindled, plunging by 60% over the previous 10 years. It's a clear signal that change isn't just coming; it's already here, as per the Wake County's announcement.
Citizens of Wake County needn't worry about the lack of in-person options in the aforementioned towns—there are plentiful ways to settle up with the taxman. Online payments can be processed through Wake County's portal which supports an array of payment methods such as ACH, Visa, and digital wallets like Apple Pay, with just a note to keep in mind: ACH payments are free of charge, but those opting for credit cards or digital wallets will encounter a service fee.
Those preferring a face-to-face interaction still have a traditional avenue available. In-person payments will continue to be welcomed at Wake County’s regional centers, the Town of Garner, and the Wake County Tax Administration Office. And for the still more traditional avenue, checks are accepted via mail to Wake County Tax Administration's PO Box in Raleigh.
