According to the NWS forecast, today's weather includes a slight chance of showers before 11 am with the possibility of thunderstorms between 11 am and 4 pm. It is expected to be mostly sunny with a high near 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The chance of precipitation is estimated at 60%, with the potential for thunderstorms to deliver higher rainfall amounts.
In an update issued at 5:52 am EDT today, visibility was significantly limited to a mere half-mile amidst a light drizzle and foggy conditions. Despite the calm start, with humidity lingering at 97% and calm winds initially, the weather is set to take a turn. Southwest winds will pick up at 5 to 9 mph during the morning.
The special weather statement released by the National Weather Service at 6:27 am EDT warns of dense fog affecting the northern and central Virginia, southern and central Maryland, and the Washington DC metropolitan area with visibility varying from 1/4 to 2 miles. Commuters are advised to exercise caution, "Please maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front and obey local speed limits," the statement reads.
Looking further ahead, the NWS forecasts high temperatures continuing to rise from Sunday through Tuesday expecting an extended period of excessively hot and humid conditions. Heat indices in the afternoon and evening are projected to range from 100 to 115 degrees. Storm damage, including winds up to 70 mph, is also on the table for Thursday afternoon, part of an outlook that stretches well into next week.
While spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, the NWS Hazardous Weather Outlook underscores the seriousness of the predicted conditions.
