The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has opened a new trail system in the Olsen Creek State Forest in Whatcom County. The area now offers over seven miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, expanding from the previously available two miles. These trails provide views of Lake Whatcom, Bellingham Bay, and the Canadian Cascades.
According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Olsen Creek Trail System is part of the 2019 Baker to Bellingham Non-Motorized Recreation Plan and supports the 2025 Outdoor Access and Responsible Recreation (OARR) Strategic Plan. DNR developed the project in partnership with the Washington Trails Association (WTA), Whatcom Chapter of Backcountry Horsemen of Washington (BCHW), and the Whatcom Mountain Bike Coalition (WMBC).
To reduce environmental impact, the trails were designed to avoid sensitive areas, such as wildlife habitats and water sources. Educational signage has been installed to promote responsible use of the forest.
Parking at the trailhead is limited. Washington State Department of Natural Resources is asking visitors to park responsibly, especially those with large vehicles like horse trailers, and to avoid blocking access gates. Carpooling is encouraged, and visitors are advised to consider alternative DNR recreation areas if parking is full. The nearby Y Road Trailhead does not require a Discover Pass.
The new trail system is intended to support outdoor recreation while maintaining environmental protection.
