As Williamson County and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) gather to commemorate the completion of a substantial infrastructure venture, the East WilCo Highway Segment 3, the region looks forward to improved traffic flow and connectivity. The ribbon-cutting on June 20 marked the transformation of a once modest two-lane roadway into a contemporary four-lane divided highway, complete with bridgework over US 79 and Union Pacific Railroad tracks. This project, a manifestation of the visions of local leadership, began back in the fall of 2022 and now stands ready to facilitate the daily commutes of Williamson County residents.
Commissioner Pct. 4 Russ Boles, in a statement obtained by Williamson County's official website, highlighted the scale of this undertaking by noting, "The East WilCo Highway Segment 3 project is the largest road project in Williamson County history." He emphasized the value of this investment, which seeks to ensure not only to reduce idle times in traffic but to enrich the quality of life for families in the region by making homecomings brisk.
The highway section, opening to traffic on June 21, boasts enhanced safety features, particularly at railroad crossings, and will offer an alternative route around US 79 in Hutto. The design also includes improvements for emergency services and school transportation, as well as better access to industrial and commercial sites dotting the region. As expressed by U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions, "The completion of Segment 3 of the East WilCo Highway is a testament to strong local leadership and smart infrastructure."
This infrastructure success story also ties into the larger economic tapestry of Williamson County, which continues to adapt swiftly to its ballooning growth and development. Notably, Marc Williams, TxDOT Executive Director, iterated that a "safe and reliable transportation system has never been more important," especially considering the proximity to the burgeoning Samsung plant in Taylor. His statement underscores the broader strategic plan to seamlessly connect SH 130 at CR 138 with US 79 and onward to I-35 north of Jarrell.
The funding partnership for East WilCo Highway Segment 3 united Williamson County and TxDOT, with financial underpinnings rooted in the voter-approved 2019 Road Bond and a direct contribution of $95 million from TxDOT. HDR and BGE stepped in as design engineers, and James Construction handled the construction duties, bringing this part of the county's transportation vision fully into the fold of Texas's evolving infrastructure landscape.
