The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is advising residents throughout the state, to limit outdoor activities from today, June 3, into the following day due to the influx of smoke from Canadian wildfires. Air quality concerns have soared to levels deemed UNHEALTHY, and the DNR anticipates the possibility of VERY UNHEALTHY spikes, particularly in the northwestern region.
Starting from noon today, the air quality advisory which encompasses the northwest will spread to encompass the entire state of Wisconsin, lasting through to noon tomorrow, June 4. According to the DNR's reports, the degradation of air quality is a direct repercussion of the wildfires raging across the Canadian landscapes, currents ferrying the smoke southeastwards and within the breaths of Wisconsinites. The DNR is keeping a keen eye on forecasts and expects recurring air quality issues throughout the week.
Severe implications for heart and lung disease patients, older adults, and children have prompted recommendations to curtail strenuous outdoor activities, either by reducing their intensity or by rescheduling them indoors. In an attempt to protect residents from the harmful effects of the wildfire smoke, DNR suggests the following: checking the local air quality index, using the WisconsinAQM mobile app for updates, signing up for email or text air quality advisories, staying indoors, and keeping windows and doors closed. People should also try to minimize indoor pollution sources like vacuum cleaning, excessive cooking, and using candles or gas-powered appliances. Installation of high-efficiency air filters and using N95 masks while outdoors for extended durations are also recommended.
