Four Messmer High School students were robbed at gunpoint Friday afternoon just blocks from campus, capping off the school's first week back in session with a scare that has neighbors on edge. Milwaukee police say the robbery happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of N. Port Washington Avenue near East Capitol Drive, where the students were confronted by armed, masked suspects who appeared to be teenagers themselves.
According to TMJ4 News, the students were walking east on Capitol Drive around 3:40 p.m. when they were approached by the suspects, per a message sent by the school. The armed suspects demanded and took property from the student victims before fleeing the scene, and investigators are now searching for those responsible.
A school message described the robbery suspects as three masked individuals appearing to be teenagers, with one of them reported to have rose tattoos on his hand and neck. Messmer High School said it could not provide additional details because the investigation remains active, though it noted it is working with the appropriate authorities and has made counselors available for impacted students.
Neighbors Say the Fear Is Becoming Familiar
Michael Boyd, who lives near the school's campus, told the outlet the robbery rattled him. “It's scary, you know,” Boyd said. He added a message of concern for the students involved: “That's terrible, man. My heart goes out to them. I pray that they stay focused.”
Boyd said he hopes students will stay alert while moving through the neighborhood, urging them to remain vigilant while walking to and from school. His comments echo concerns raised after a similar scare on the same campus roughly two years earlier, when a Messmer student fought off an attempted abduction while walking to school.
That August 2024 incident, in which two Messmer students were approached on 7th Street near Capitol Drive around 7:20 a.m., was thwarted when one student's sister helped fight off the attacker, according to CBS 58. That earlier attack prompted a schoolwide safety alert and led Milwaukee police to open a child abuse investigation. Messmer High School, located at 742 W. Capitol Drive, was founded in 1926 and is marking its 100th anniversary this year, according to the outlet.
A Century-Old School Built on Community Rescue
Messmer's history includes its own brush with closure. After the Archdiocese of Milwaukee slated the school for shutdown in 1984 due to declining enrollment, parents and alumni organized what became known as the Messmer Miracle, reopening it in 1985 as an independent Catholic school, per the school's own account. It later became the first religious school admitted into the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program.
The school reported enrollment of 547 students in grades 9 through 12 during the 2024–2025 academic year, with 92.3% identifying as Black or African American and 73.3% classified as economically disadvantaged, according to Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction data. Messmer said the safety and well-being of its students remains its top priority following Friday's robbery.
Robbery Fits a Documented Rise in Youth Felony Cases
Friday's robbery arrives amid a documented rise in youth-involved violent felony referrals across Milwaukee County. A May 2025 report from the Wisconsin Policy Forum found that while overall juvenile justice referrals returned to pre-pandemic levels by 2024, violent felony referrals for offenses such as armed robbery climbed 50% between 2018 and 2024, with youth aged 15 and 16 accounting for 61% of all juvenile referrals countywide in that span.
That trend stands in contrast to broader citywide numbers. Milwaukee Police Department mid-year statistics showed overall crime dropping 8% during the first six months of 2026 compared with the previous year, with homicides down 30% and carjackings down 31%, per CBS 58. Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern reported in July that prosecutors were charging felony cases at their highest rate in more than a decade, supported by a 98% homicide clearance rate from Milwaukee police.
Student-targeted robberies near Milwaukee school campuses have turned deadly before. In November 2025, an 18-year-old Milwaukee high school student was fatally shot during an armed robbery at a bus stop near Assata High School, leading to armed robbery and homicide charges against two 17-year-old suspects, as previously reported by Hoodline.
What Suspects Could Face Under Wisconsin Law
Under Wisconsin Statute § 943.32(2), armed robbery is classified as a Class C felony carrying a maximum penalty of up to 40 years in prison, split between as much as 25 years of initial confinement and 15 years of extended supervision, along with fines reaching $100,000. State law defines armed robbery as taking property through force or threat of force while possessing or displaying a dangerous weapon or replica.
