The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the winners of the 2025 Invasive Species Action Awards, an honor recognizing the efforts of individuals and groups who have played a significant role in the fight against invasive species across the state. According to a news release by the Wisconsin DNR, the awards were presented by the Wisconsin Invasive Species Council as part of the Invasive Species Action Month festivities.
The recipients, representing different regions and strategies, have dedicated themselves to the prevention, control, and eradication of invasive species. Noteworthy among the winners is Abby Vogt, a Coordinator of the Timberland Invasives Partnership, who, in 2024, reached over 28,000 people through educational events and controlled invasive species over a 100-acre area. The professional group accolade went to the Wisconsin Bowfishing Association, which removed invasive fish from state waterways through coordinated tournaments and educational events. These individuals and groups, including those such as Amanda Smith, who has tackled the spread of European frog-bit, a prohibited plant, have put in commendable long hours to protect Wisconsin's ecosystems from invasive threats.
According Wisconsin DNR, Volunteers have also been instrumental in this cause, with people like "Buckthorn Bob" Housey contributing nearly 1,000 hours towards invasive species management at the Wehr Nature Center. And in the special recognition category, Tom Bressner's nearly 13 years on the Council, advising from the perspective of the Wisconsin Agri-Business Association, was acknowledged as he looks towards retirement.
Each of the awardees has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their craft, whether it was through education, direct control measures, or innovative prevention strategies. Stephanie Boismenue, as an example, engaged with over 5,000 individuals at boat landings, reared and released biocontrol beetles, and trained volunteers in water body monitoring. Such efforts typify the proactive approach taken towards the state's environmental preservation and are emblematic of the dedication recognized by the Invasive Species Action Awards.
