The Chancery in Mequon, the last Chancery in southeast Wisconsin, has gone quiet. Diners arriving to the longtime North Shore staple found the dining room closed and a handwritten note on the door that read, "While this marks the end of an era, we are filled with immense gratitude." It was a short but emotional goodbye for a spot that had anchored local dining since 1991 and served as the backdrop for countless birthdays, first dates and Friday fish fries.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the windows were covered and the sign appeared on Monday. The paper reports that calls and emails to the DeRosa-owned business were not returned. Its coverage notes that the Mequon location had been operating since 1991 and that its closure leaves no Chancery restaurants remaining in southeast Wisconsin.
From Neighborhood Pub To Shrinking Regional Brand
The Chancery started life as a neighborhood pub before becoming part of the DeRosa Corporation, which traces its roots to a 1972 opening in Racine, according to ParkSide 23. Over time, DeRosa expanded the Chancery name across southeast Wisconsin and still operates several other restaurants under its corporate umbrella.
Closures Piled Up Over Two Decades
The Mequon restaurant is the fifth Chancery to close since 2007. Earlier locations on Downer Avenue (2007), South 27th Street (2015), Wauwatosa (2016) and Waukesha (2019) have all shut their doors, the Journal Sentinel reports. That slow drip of closures left Mequon as the last holdout until this week’s sign went up.

Locals responded with a mix of surprise and nostalgia. A thread on Reddit quickly filled with memories of family dinners, birthday celebrations and longtime traditions at the restaurant. The Chancery had been listed as a tenant at the Mequon Pavilions, according to the shopping center’s Brixmor leasing page, which now shows a prime opening for a replacement operator or new concept in the center.
