The violent episode, which unfolded near the exit ramp for eastbound Highway 385, was reported to authorities at around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday night, according to Action News 5.
Officers quickly responded to the scene, where the woman was pronounced dead. Working tirelessly, the injured man was transported to a nearby hospital, where his condition has since remained critical. As WREG reports, the recent roadside tragedy comes amid broader efforts by law enforcement to curb violence on Memphis roadways — an effort that has become a focal point in response to a disturbing uptick in interstate shootings.
Community members are calling for action and voicing their fears in the wake of this and other similar incidents. Tonii Mills, a local resident who lost a relative to violence on I-40, expressed his concern in an interview with WREG, saying, "These new Memphis youngins that's coming up, they real dangerous. They real out here. They real in the streets." Mills' poignant remarks underscore a widespread anxiety felt by many in the community regarding the recklessness and disrespect on the streets, leading to increased fatalities and injuries.
In response to the growing problem, the Tennessee Highway Patrol has stepped up its presence to assist in making Memphis and Shelby County roadways safer. "The Highway Patrol here is to make Memphis a safer place. We're not out to make stops that don't mean anything. We want people to be safe," THP Lt. Col. Jimmie Johnson emphasized in a statement obtained by WREG. Quantifying the severity of the situation, the incident on Saturday night marks the 24th case of gun violence on Memphis highways since January, as reported by FOX13.
Memphis Police are continuing their investigation and have made an appeal to the public. Anyone who has information about this most recent interstate shooting is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH. The community is being called upon to aid in providing law enforcement with critical leads that could help prevent further violence and bring about justice for the victims of these senseless acts of aggression.
