Following a fatal shooting in broad daylight that shook the Sacramento community, police have announced the arrest of 19-year-old Vernon Jordan in connection with the crime. The Sacramento Police Department disclosed that the incident took place just after 12:30 p.m. on June 1, in the 2800 block of Broadway, an area that is no stranger to the pulse of city life due to its local businesses and proximity to Highway 99.
Upon their arrival at the scene, officers discovered a man in his 20s with gunshot wounds, who was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and subsequently died on June 5, noted KCRA. Another victim, a man in his 40s, got himself to medical care and is expected to recover. Despite the grim tally that now reads 24 homicides in Sacramento this year, this particular case marks a significant step for law enforcement and, perhaps, a small measure of closure for those affected.
Further details emerged from the scene of the shooting, where a Toyota Camry was found riddled with at least seven bullet holes punctuating its driver's side. Witnesses described a chilling tableau where an individual wearing a mask was seen leaning from the window of a vehicle, discharging several rounds into the Camry before fleeing, CBS News Sacramento reported. As investigators pieced together this puzzle, it led them to Jordan, who now faces homicide-related charges.
With an investigation prolonged over a month, Jordan of Carmichael was taken into custody and booked into the Sacramento County jail where he is being held without the possibility of bail. His court appearance is set for Thursday, raising the curtain on what will be a closely watched legal process.
