Carson, Calif. – In a decidedly uncompromising move by law enforcement agencies, 20 individuals were arrested in Carson during an enforcement operation against illegal street racing, CBS Los Angeles reported. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, in collaboration with several agencies, carried out the crackdown on July 13, leading also to 11 issued traffic citations and the towing of 19 vehicles.

While fighting to curb this surge in illegal racing, a study released by LA County officials in March highlighted a notable increase of 64% in street takeovers within Supervisor Holly Mitchell's 2nd District, which encompasses Carson. Nearly 300 incidents were reported in just the last quarter of 2024. Working closely with California Highway Patrol and local officials, the LASD has intensified their efforts, a phenomenon that Captain Alise Norman spoke to: “Let me be absolutely clear: these activities are not only illegal—they are reckless, disruptive, and deadly," Captain Norman said. Issued for misdemeanor warrant citations, two out of the 20 arrests were made, and seven vehicles were impounded for 30 days.

The enforcement detail not only targeted drivers and spectators involved in street racing but also aimed at those with vehicles bearing illegal modifications. Two of the citations handed out were for modified emissions violations. The actions taken reflect the Carson Sheriff's Station’s undeterred resolve in ensuring road safety and rule of law, as per the information released by the Sheriff's Information Bureau.

"If you're caught racing, spectating, or filming these events, you will face consequences. We are impounding vehicles, arresting drivers and organizers, and issuing citations—and in many cases, arrests—to bystanders who enable this dangerous behavior," stated Captain Alise Norman in an effort to deliver a stern warning to offenders. With tampered emissions systems, loud exhausts, and unsafe alterations being targeted, those whose vehicles don't meet California standards may face temporary or permanent loss of their cars. According to LASD Carson Station, responsible community members continue to support these initiatives, and the station is calling the public to report any street racing activities to ensure safety on the roads.
