The political fundraising platform ActBlue, well-known for being a financial powerhouse for Democratic candidates, has found itself under the microscope of top House committees. On Tuesday, three committees issued a subpoena to the organization, intensifying their probe into allegations that ActBlue may have accepted "fraudulent or illegal" donations. The House Administration, Oversight, and Judiciary Committees are spearheading the investigation, with their sights set on potential abuses of the online donation system, according to the House Judiciary Committee.

Initial cooperation from ActBlue earlier in the year gave way to a less-than-transparent stance in June, prompting frustration from the Committees. "Although ActBlue initially provided documents voluntarily, it has since suspended its cooperation with the Committees," the House Judiciary Committee shared in a statement. Therefore, the Committee felt it had no choice but to "resort to compulsory process to obtain the requested materials." The claims centered around whether ActBlue followed proper security protocol, such as requiring a CVV number for credit card donations – a practice they have since adopted – and if the donations accepted came from domestic, or potentially foreign sources.

The probe, persisting since 2023, gained momentum last month when both current and former employees of ActBlue were summoned for transcribed interviews. This latest subpoena demands documents related to internal misconduct and whistleblower retaliation allegations. In a past response to the investigation, an ActBlue spokesperson clarified, "We rigorously protect donors' security and maintain strict anti-fraud compliance practices. We have zero tolerance for fraud on our platform," as reported by the House Judiciary Committee.

Furthermore, the committees accused ActBlue of concocting excuses to avoid further cooperation, and misleadingly alleging committee coordination with the DOJ. "ActBlue alleges that the Committees are pursuing oversight for an improper purpose of fact-finding for a Department of Justice investigation. This assertion is inaccurate," the lawmakers countered. Emphasizing their legislative duty, the Committees have stressed the importance of protecting the integrity of federal elections and preventing the exploitation of fundraising platforms by bad actors, including those from abroad. ActBlue now faces an August 12 deadline to satisfy the order, as stated by the House Judiciary Committee.

Reaching out to ActBlue for comments has not yet yielded an immediate response. As the deadline approaches, the scrutinizing glare of the investigation promises to remain fixed on one of the largest arteries of Democratic fundraising infrastructure, potentially testing the strength of its compliance and transparency measures, as per the House Judiciary Committee.
