On Sunday morning, a tragedy unfolded at a BP gas station located at 778 Grant Street in Akron, where a shooting claimed the life of a young man who had endeavored to act in defense of others. The Akron Police Department reported that they received calls regarding the incident at around 4:18 a.m. and discovered the victim, 26-year-old Ar’mon Covington, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The police, arriving soon after, administered emergency aid to Covington, but he was pronounced deceased later, losing his life after stepping in during a moment of perceived injustice. The suspect, according to the Akron Police Department's social media post, was allegedly harassing women in the parking lot prior to the fatal confrontation. It was when Covington intervened that the suspect fired multiple shots at him, following which the suspect left the crime scene in a vehicle, driving southbound on Grant Street.
The search for the suspect is ongoing, and authorities are reaching out to the public for assistance. The call to action for community support was disseminated through the Akron Police Department’s social media post, asking anyone with information to contact the Akron Police Department Detective Bureau. In an effort to encourage community participation, they have provided several avenues for citizens to submit tips, including calling the Summit County Crimestoppers or texting with the TIPSCO code and even an app for easily relaying information.
