Yesterday morning, Akron's Mason Community Learning Center parking lot transformed into a scene of violence and chaos as gunfire erupted during a large gathering, resulting in multiple injuries. According to FOX8, a 911 caller reported a "massive shooting" with people and vehicles franticly dispersing from the area. During the incident, more than 100 shots may have been fired, leaving five young individuals struck by bullets and another ten wounded amid the ensuing pandemonium.
Witnesses and police described the confusion as shots were fired among a crowd of over 100 people, mainly teenagers and young adults. Some indulged in drinking and smoking marijuana before the sudden outbreak of violence. WKYC reports show disturbing surveillance footage that captured the crowd running for cover and vehicles colliding and striking individuals as they attempted to escape the shooting. Akron Police Lt. Michael Murphy detailed the victims' injuries to WKYC' Annabelle Childers, indicating they were non-life-threatening. However, the number of people injured is increasing as some sought aid on their own at various hospitals.
The Summit Emergency Communications Center received over 30 911 calls post 3:05 a.m., with vivid accounts of the terror experienced by those at the scene. A chilling call contained a woman's voice urging her group to a car after sighting a person shot, as per reviewed calls by Signal Akron. Following that, calls depicted a shootout, one desperate individual insisted that a known person get up from the ground and run, and another caller begged for police to arrive as a cousin sustained a gunshot.
Amid the investigation into the shooting, Lt. Murphy spoke of prior incidents, hinting at a possible link to a 'takeover' of a Waffle House earlier that evening by teenagers, which was dispersed by police. These events led to teenagers being pursued by many police jurisdictions throughout the night. They finally congregated in the Mason CLC parking lot. Signal Akron gathers information around this. Authorities speculate that the violence was limited to the school's parking area, recovering a haul of over 100 shell casings from several shooters.
Police have made no arrests yet and are sifting through the school's security footage to identify any potential suspects, as the officers are confronted with a lack of cooperation from witnesses. Lt. Murphy stressed the importance of community involvement to prevent future incidents, "It's not just a police issue. This is going to take the entire community's involvement in order for us to be able to prevent things like this from happening again," he told WKYC.
