Albany is set to experience a surge in its event and hospitality capabilities, thanks to a generous $10 million grant awarded for the expansion of the Albany Capital Center (ACC). Governor Kathy Hochul, mindful of Albany's potential as a top event destination, made the announcement, much to the delight of local leaders and stakeholders.

The grant, facilitating the growth of the ACC into a full-fledged premier event venue, compliments the Governor's whopping $400 million investment in the Championing Albany’s Potential (CAP) Initiative, an effort aimed to give the downtown Albany area a much-needed facelift.

An infusion of funds at this scale is projected to greatly boost the Capital City's appeal for hosting large-scale gatherings, something Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight emphasized. In a statement obtained by the Governor's Office, Knight explained that the expansion enhances "Albany’s ability to attract world-class gatherings that support local businesses, create jobs, and generate sustained economic activity across the Capital Region."

"We are thankful to be at the forefront of Governor Hochul’s CAP initiative in downtown Albany," told the Governor's Office by Albany Convention Center Authority Executive Director and CEO Monica Kurzejeski. The strategic location of the ACC expansion project, situated at 126 State Street, is expected to extend the venue's offer with five new meeting rooms, a large ballroom, and an inviting 4,000 square foot courtyard for outdoor events.

With this new project, the ACC's rentable space will grow to 84,000 square feet, as stated by Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, who told the Governor's Office, "The expansion of the Albany Capital Center will help New York's Capital City attract even more world-class events."

Assemblymember John T. McDonald III, who also sits as a board member of the Albany Convention Center Authority, expressed his gratitude for the investment that nears doubling the size of the ACC. As a member of the board, McDonald recognizes the significant impact the center has had, from annual visitorship upwards of 100,000 to generating substantial sales tax revenue, a boon to both local budgets and taxpayers.

The entire project, with a price tag of $54.9 million, promises to be a catalyst for further economic activity in Downtown Albany and beyond, having been recommended for funding by ESD’s Regional Office and Regional Council. It's part of the larger tapestry of the CAP Initiative which includes planning and funding for improvements across commercial corridors and cultural experiences in Albany. Discover Albany's President and CEO, Jill Delaney, couldn't be more thrilled about the prospects, anticipating the center's expansion to meet the growing demands for meeting and event space in the region.
