Ohio's judicial landscape has just shifted with the temporary elevation of Appellate Judge Robert J. Patton to the Supreme Court of Ohio for a special case hearing. Patton, known for his extensive legal background and focus on white-collar crime, brings nearly three decades of experience to Ohio's highest court. His assignment to the Supreme Court bench comes after Justice Deters recused himself from the ongoing case involving the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and Ohio Power Co.

Born and raised in Cleveland with a grassroots understanding of hard work, Judge Patton depicted his journey to the bench as one of relentless dedication. "Every day I wake up and work as hard as I can for the residents in the Eleventh District," he told  Court News Ohio. And on Tuesday, he got the chance to directly extend this commitment to the entire state during the oral arguments at the Supreme Court.

Patton's foray into law began with an early legal tussle witnessed at the tender age of 15. His interest deepened while studying at Cleveland State University (CSU), where philosophy and bioethics led him eventually to eschew academia in favor of legal practice. Having cut his teeth first as a clerk and then as a trial attorney, Patton honed his prosecutorial eye for nearly 17 years with a focus on ethics and the pursuit of justice in white-collar crime cases.

Ascending to the appellate bench was no small feat for a man without a legacy or connections within the legal sphere. Yet, Patton's tenure as a prosecutor and subsequent transition to judge showcases a man unwavering in his pursuit for fair adjudication. "Being a judge is the natural evolution forward and a heightened version of that ethical duty I had as a prosecutor to seek justice," Patton conveyed to Court News Ohio. After a dedicated stint as a prosecutor, he was appointed to the Eleventh District Court of Appeals in 2023 before being elected to stay on the bench.

As Judge Patton temporarily occupies the role left vacant by Justice Deters for the specific case No. 2024-1142, his background in ethics and commitment to justice are set to be more visible on the state's legal stage. With a reputation for rigorous work and an upbringing that underlines the value of service, Patton's time on the Supreme Court of Ohio, however brief, is poised to be a noteworthy chapter in his career and for the Ohio judiciary.
