The Arlington Animal Shelter has been facing a severe space crunch, reaching a point where they've had to halt all owner-surrendered pet admissions starting June 17. According to a statement from the shelter, they're now operating with over 200 animals daily, well beyond their maximum capacity of 159. The reason behind this tough call is to prioritize the animals already in their care and to prevent the need for euthanasia, ensuring that the shelter maintains a standard of animal welfare and operational sustainability.

In the wake of this news, the shelter director, James Orloski, expressed the gravity of the situation. "Our shelter is operating far beyond capacity, making it difficult to accept new animals. While we are proud to serve the community, surrendering pets to the shelter should be a last resort, as our limited space can lead to negative outcomes even for healthy, friendly animals," Orloski said, per the City of Arlington. The shelter is urging the public to explore every other avenue before considering surrendering their pets to the already overwhelmed shelter.

Arlington Animal Services has listed several recommendations that could serve as alternatives for pet owners looking to rehome their animals. Amongst available resources is Rehome by Adopt a Pet, a platform that facilitates direct connections between current pet owners and potential adopters. They've also made available an Arlington Animal Services Relocation Packet, providing a comprehensive guide with tips for successful pet relocation. Various local rescue organizations have been suggested, alongside the use of personal social media, as less stressful options for pets in need of a new home.

Meanwhile, the shelter is also continuing its push to find permanent homes for the animals currently in their care by offering significant adoption discounts. Prospective pet parents can adopt for just $5, a dramatic decrease from the standard $90 fee for cats and $100 for dogs. The fees cover vaccinations, spaying or neutering, microchipping, city license for Arlington residents, and necessary testing.
