A recent fatal stabbing in Logan Heights has culminated in an arrest made by San Diego Police this past week, shedding light on the ongoing concerns about violence among the city's homeless populations. The San Diego Police Department reported that last Friday, officers received a distress call and subsequently found a man with a stabbing wound near a transient camp behind a Walmart; despite attempts at life-saving measures, he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
Initially misidentified, the victim was later confirmed as Jason Poindexter, a 46-year-old Black male who was found just outside the makeshift sheltering area, the area has become a focal point for issues surrounding homelessness and the services, or lack thereof, provided to those in need. Witnesses reported sighting a male and female quickly leaving the scene, both seemingly also part of the transient community, with the male suspect later being identified and arrested on one count of homicide. The arrested man is Ruben Perez, aged 46, described as a bald Hispanic male with a stocky build.
The female referred to by witnesses, a Hispanic female in her mid-40s, had been taken into custody and lodged at Las Colinas Detention Facility, but she was released pending further investigation, indicating a complex case where the truth remains as elusive as the security and dignity so often denied to those within the transient communities.
The San Diego Police Department continues to request the public's assistance. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477, as shared in their press release.
