The Austin Police Department's Lake Patrol Unit is gearing up to enforce a ban on personal watercraft on Lake Austin this Independence Day weekend. According to a news release from the City of Austin, the ban targets water devices such as jet skis, wet bikes, motorized surfboards, and others that require the operator to sit, stand, or kneel on the vessel. The prohibition starts earlier today, July 3, and ends at sunrise on Saturday, July 5, in line with City Ordinance 8-5-81. However, those looking to enjoy the water will still be able to use non-motorized vessels, including kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.

The temporary ban, which is an annual measure, aims to ensure the safety of the multitudes expected to freely flock to the lake and surrounding parks during the holiday celebrations. The restriction, which is exclusively applicable to Lake Austin, will see Austin Police vigorously patrol the waterways. They also encourage all waterway users to adhere to the Texas Water Safety Act and City of Austin boating laws and ordinances. The police forcefully remind boaters to not only practice safe boating but also to call 9-1-1 for all reckless operation of boats or emergencies.

It is important to note that Ordinance 8-5-81 establishes specific dates throughout the year when such watercrafts are prohibited, which, besides this upcoming holiday, also includes Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Moreover, the ordinance requires motorboat operators to stay on the right side of the lake, except in cases of emergency, and commands that all watercraft be operated at a speed that is reasonable and prudent given the existing conditions.

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Austin Police Department, issued a joint statement urging the public to make this a safe holiday. They reiterate their desire for the community to enjoy the parks and lakes but also not to forget to responsibly prioritize safety during these times of celebration. This emphasis on caution reflects an ongoing concern to balance public enjoyment with the necessary measures to protect and maintain a secure environment for all.
