If you're planning to spend your Independence Day weekend at Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park, take note: parking operations are getting a tweak, or rather, a restriction. In a move aimed squarely at addressing the surge of visitors and the corresponding concerns for public safety, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department has decided that less is more when it comes to cars in the park over the July 4th weekend.
As of Friday, July 4, parking at the park will be capped. Getting a spot will be like a game of musical chairs – once the music stops, or the parking fills up, no more vehicles can join the party. Park Rangers will be on hand to direct the flow and make sure everyone's clear about where they can and cannot leave their cars. And heads up, should you choose to ignore the rules and park outside the gated entrance along Commons Ford Road, your vehicle may be towed faster than you can say 'firework finale'. According to the City of Austin's recent announcement, "No parking will be allowed outside the park’s gated entrance."
The city's urging folks to buddy up and carpool, a smart move to not only ensure you snag a spot, but also to do a solid for the environment. This parking squeeze play goes into effect from July 4th through the 6th, so if you've got plans to grill, chill, or thrill by the lakeside, get your carpool cronies in line early.
Amidst the anticipation of fireworks and festivities, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department isn't just thinking about where you'll park your car. They're also keen on keeping the parks pristine, urging everyone to follow Leave No Trace principles. In essence, treat the park like you would your own living room – unless your living room is a mess, in which case, aim higher. Remember to plan ahead and prepare. Dispose of waste properly. Leave what you find. Respect wildlife. Be considerate of other visitors. It's a collective effort, a dance of give-and-take, to keep Austin's parks beautiful for everyone to enjoy – on the 4th of July weekend, and beyond.
